Saturday Secret Matinees series (2015 edition)
Weekly, January 10 – March 28, 2015
Grand Illusion CinemaSeattle, WA
The eighth edition of our annual three-month series of old fashioned weekend matinees, with weekly episodes of a classic movie serial paired with a classic (but secret!) feature film – all on 16mm film.
In The Adventures of Captain Marvel (1941, 12 episodes), can the legendary super hero stop The Scorpion from obtaining the most powerful weapon in the world? Directed by the ace team of William Witney and John English, the chapterplay is packed with action, and features great special effects by the legendary Lydecker brothers.
“Unquestionably one of the finest movie serials ever made, possibly the best.” - Jim Harmon & Donald F. Glut, The Great Movie Serials: Their Sound and Fury
“Outstanding...the studio's masterpiece.” - William C. Cline, In the Nick of Time
“The Adventures of Captain Marvel is in a class by itself... I wish more people could see the first comic book superhero to make the leap to the big screen, in what many aficionados consider the best serial ever made.” - Leonard Maltin, “Movie Crazy,” Indiewire.com
The monthly themes for this year’s features were: Saturday Morning TV Classics (in memoriam for a lost tradition), Antique Futures (pre-1940 science fiction), and Walk Like a Wagon (classic westerns, 1939-1957).
