The Scarecrow 2.1 Campaign was a major (successful!) effort to raise $250,000 to modernize their antiquated database, point of sales systems, and website; as well as support post-pandemic recovery and the return of their in-person free community programming. As part of that they produced a livestream telethon, a seven and a half hour extravaganza with special guests, fun video segements, and more.
Guests and entertainment included Jeff Krulik, a Scarecrow staff movie trivia challenge hosted by Ken Jennings, Clyde Petersen, a new video collage by Collide-O-Scope, Wes Hurley, music by Tomo Nakayama and Warning; Danger!, Tommy Swenson of the Beacon Cinema, and others.
The Sprocket Society contributed a 25 minute segment of 16mm short films, projected onto the screen and recorded on video at the Grand Illusion Cinema (still shuttered at the time due to lockdown). The segment was “hosted” by the Grand Illusion's mascot, Jimmy. Our selections included nanocinema fans in 1970s Afghanistan, Betty Boop, King Kong, nickelodean slides, the legendary Dancing Pig, Thomas Armat, plus trailers for the Spy Smasher and Captain Marvel movie serials.
Scarecrow Video is an independently owned, non-profit video sales and rental store in Seattle. It is the largest publicly available video library in the world, with over 157,000 titles (and growing).
