Saturday Secret Matinees (2019 edition)
Weekly, January 5 – March 30, 2019
Grand Illusion Cinema Seattle, WA
Our 11th annual three-month series recreating the matinees of yesteryear, with weekly serial episodes paired with a secret classic feature film, all on 16mm film.
This year’s serial was Mysterious Dr. Satan (1940, 15 episodes). A sinister genius is bent on building an army of invincible killer robots in a plan to seize the wealth and power of the nation. When the governor is assassinated, Bob Wayne dons the mask of The Copperhead to avenge his death – and stop Dr. Satan’s ruthless march to power! Legendary co-directors William Witney and John English deliver one of the finest serials ever made, packed with spectacular acrobatics, lethal gadgets, and film noir atmospherics.
“One of the all-time classics of the serial genre. ...Doctor Satan’s action scenes are unfailingly excellent, but its most memorable aspect is its ominous, occasionally nightmarish atmosphere...giving even routine fistfights a sinister and shadowy look...” - The Files of Jerry Blake
“One of Republic’s best serials, and one that set the pace for others that followed. ...[Features] some of the greatest stunt work in the fights to ever appear on the screen in any kind of film.” - The Great Movie Serials by Jim Harmon & Donald F. Glut
The feature films followed these bi-weekly themes:
- Jan. 5 & 12: Weird Crimes – pre-Code pulp fever dreams
- Jan. 19 & 25: War is Hell– award-winning films depicting the horrors of war
- Feb. 1 & 9: Weimar Silent Masterpieces – landmark art films
- Feb. 16 & 23: Song & Dance – 1930s musical gems
