Saturday Secret Matinees (2017 edition)

Weekly, January 7 – March 25, 2017

Grand Illusion Cinema
Seattle, WA

An annual three-month series recreating the old-fashioned weekend matinee. Each week’s show offers a cliffhanger episode of a movie serial (shown complete and in order), plus a secret classic feature ̵ all on 16mm film.

This year we presented the serial Undersea Kingdom (1936, 12 episodes). All-American hero Ray “Crash” Corrigan is plunged into an incredible adventure miles below the ocean surface! In the lost city of Atlantis, the evil tyrant Unga Khan plans to use super-science to destroy and conquer the entire surface world! Crash and the brilliant Professor Norton travel there in a rocket submarine, becoming embroiled in a war against killer robots, disintegrator rays, and rocket aeroplanes in a desperate bid to save civilization itself! Campy, ridiculous, and uneven — but jam-packed with madhouse action, vintage special effects, and pulpy heroics — Undersea Kingdom is among the most enduring and beloved serials of the era.

The secret classic feature films followed monthly themes: Giant Monsters, Art-House Cinema, and TV Time (with various cartoons, Saturday morning shows and more).
