Saturday Secret Matinees series (2014 edition)

Weekly, January 11 – March 29, 2014

Grand Illusion Cinema
Seattle, WA

An annual three-month series of old fashioned weekend matinees, showing weekly cliffhanger episodes of a movie serial, each paired with a classic (but secret!) feature film – all presented on 16mm.

This year’s serial was Batman and Robin (1949, 15 episodes). In a city already besieged with crime, the caped crusaders must try to stop The Wizard, a black-hooded criminal mastermind with a secret submarine base...and stolen technology that could give him supreme power! Made near the end of the movie serial era on a very low budget, Batman and Robin was the second (and final) serial to feature the legendary comic book heroes created by Bob Kane. The popularity of its re-release in the 1960s partly inspired the campy TV series starring Adam West and Burt Ward. But this one plays it straight (or at least tries to), delivering 15 chapters of action, thrills, and intrigue!

The secret features were organized into monthly themes: Superheroes! (more powerful than a projector beam), Tough Guys! (gangsters, masterminds, and westerns), and B-Movie Monsters! (ow-budget creature features).
