Fantastical Voyages and Incredible Journeys
August 12, 2012
Alamo Drafthouse RitzAustin, TX
The inaugural meeting of the Austin, TX chapter of The Sprocket Society, with guests from the Texas Archive of the Moving Image (TAMI).
A program of shorts about journeys, real and imagined.
Films shown included legendary later work by the wizard of the silent screen Georges Méliès; a rare restoration of a Western made by his brother Gaston Méliès at their Star Film Ranch in San Antonio, Texas; a 1930s adventure documentary on African Pygmies that inspired Werner Herzog to become a filmmaker; a chapter of the original Flash Gordon serial; and a cosmically psychedelic experimental work dealing with “the end of mankind on Earth, prophesying man’s liberation from his earthly bounds to roam the Universe at will.”
