Citizen Kane (1941) hardly needs any introduction. Surely one of the very best films ever made. Even after more than 70 years, its audacious inventiveness, visual artistry, and sheer dramatic power continue to amaze and impress.
The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) is a stunning film that is unfairly neglected. Infamously re-cut and burdened with a happy ending by the studio, many shun it as the butchery that ruined Welles’ career in Hollywood. In fact, even in its altered form Ambersons remains an artistically triumphant and emotionally devastating portrayal of the collapse of a family, the end of an epoch, and (ironically) a betrayal of trust. This is an exceptionally rare opportunity to see this work on 35mm, as it was intended.
